Belgium’s Freddy Maertens was born on February 13, 1952. He was a talented rider who won a total of 222 races including a Grand Tour, two World Championship Road Race titles, and many other races during his 15 year professional career spanning 1972-1986.

The Belgian star won the Points Jersey on three occasions in the Tour de France, in 1976, 1978, and 1981.

At the 1977 Vuelta a Espana, he won the overall title and the Points Jersey. Most notable is his astonishing feat of 13 stage victories. 13 stage victories in a single Grand Tour is a record that stands to this day.

Maertens won the World Championship Road Race in 1976 and 1981. Maertens was 2nd in the 1973 race.

Freddy presently lives near Roeselare in Belgium and works at the Belgium National Cycling Museum.
